A natural monument of 135 hectares formed by the accumulation of sand from the Arguin bank and the ocean.
Height (between 100 and 115 m), length (2.7 km) number of grains of sand (60 million cubic meters)! This imposing mass of sand, always moving inland and in the forest that it nibbles every year from 4 to 5 meters, is a natural archive that allows us to retrace 4000 years of history. Water, sand and forest come together to form this exceptional place. From the top of the dune a beautiful landscape lesson is offered to the visitor.
Over the millennia, nature has created this extraordinary dune which is one of the most beautiful and most visited natural sites in France. Like the Mont Ventoux, the Falaises d’Etretat and the Pont du Gard, it is also part of the Network of Great Sites of France. Due to its quite exceptional character, the Dune of Pilat is also known outside France and appeals to a large number of people around the world.
