In Highlands (Iceland), The Maelifell is a majestic volcano which emerges with its cone of green moss in the middle of a black sand desert. Maelifell emerged in the south ofIceland when glaciers retreated after volcanic eruptions under the Myrdalsjökull ice cap 10 years ago during the last glaciation.

Mælifell is a 791 meter high volcano. It is the third largest glacier in the country. It is particularly renowned for its bright green coloring in summer, which contrasts sharply with the black sands that surround it. Because of its beauty, Maelifell has featured in films such as Noah and television series such as Game of Thrones.

The site is accessible by car from Reykjavikn taking the ring road, going east. This journey can only be done by 4x4, as it involves river crossings and very rough terrain. Maelifell is also visited on several highland treks. The most notable of these is the Laugavegur road, the most popular multi-day hiking route inIceland.
