“Don Juan or If Don Juan Were a Woman…” is an erotic drama film released in 1973 and directed by Roger Vadim. The film brings together Brigitte Bardot, the French cinema icon, and Jane Birkin, an equally well-known singer and actress.
In the film, Brigitte Bardot plays the character of Jeanne, a modern woman who considers herself the reincarnation of Don Juan and who boasts of destroying the men who succumb to her charms. She confesses to a priest, played by Mathieu Carrière, and confesses to him the murder she committed as well as her past sexual relations. The film explores the dark and seductive sides of Jeanne and her ability to lure men into her web.
As for Jane Birkin, she plays the role of Clara in the film. The character of Clara is involved in Jeanne's story, thus contributing to the development of the plot.
The film was directed by Roger Vadim, who had previously directed Brigitte Bardot in the iconic 1956 film, “And God… Created Woman”[ Vadim had been attracted to Bardot's bold character and sexual freedom, which made her inspired to create the character of Don Juan for her in this film.
Brigitte Bardot did not fail to publish a touching message just after the death of Jane Birkin.
