La poledance is a discipline that combines dance and acrobatics around a bar. This dance, originally practiced in traveling fairground circuses where scantily clad artists danced around the poles supporting the big top to entertain spectators, then by strippers from the end of the 1960s, has become a discipline sporting and artistic in its own right from the 1990s. Pole dancing is mainly practiced by women but the circle of men who indulge in it grows from year to year.
