Goldorak celebrates its 49th anniversary: A look back at a legend of Japanese animation
October 5, 2024 marks the 49th anniversary of Goldorak, the famous giant robot that has left its mark on generations of fans around the world. Created by Go Nagai and produced by Toei Animation, Goldorak made its debut on Japanese television on October 5, 1975.
A cultural revolution
Goldorak was a real cultural revolution, especially in France where it was broadcast for the first time on July 3, 1978 on Antenne 2 in the show Récré A2, presented by Dorothée. This giant robot not only captivated children, but it also introduced Japanese pop culture to a Western audience still unfamiliar with this genre.
An international success
The original series has 74 episodes. In France, it was a resounding success, with regular reruns until 1980 and even beyond. Goldorak has become a social phenomenon, inspiring comics, toys, and even symphonic concerts such as the Goldorak Xperienz at the Grand Rex to celebrate its 45th anniversary.
A lasting legacy
The impact of Goldorak has not faded with time. In 2021, a tribute comic was published by five French authors with the agreement of Go Nagai, setting the action ten years after the fi . In addition, a reboot of the animated series, titled Goldorak U (Grendizer U in Japanese), is slated for 2024, promising to rekindle the flame among old fans and win over new ones.
