The work of Doisneau has been awarded numerous prizes : Kodak Prize in 1947, Niepce Prize in 1956, Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1983, Balzac Prize in 1986.
Robert Doisneau was working on Paris, its suburbs and its inhabitants: artisans, bistros, tramps, street urchins, lovers, jugglers, etc. Over nearly half a century, he recorded thousands of portraits of the common people of Paris. Some of his photos, such as “The Kiss of the Town Hall”, have gone around the world. Doisneau is a patient passerby who always maintains a certain distance from his subjects. He watches for the anecdote, the little story. His photos are often imbued with humor but also nostalgia, irony and tenderness.
